The Birth of Drug Diversion Detection Automation – Part 9

In Parts 4, 5, 7, and 8 I have highlighted HelioMetrics, Kit Check’s BlueSight, Invistics’ Flowlytics, and Protenus. Today’s overview will be for Omnicell Analytics

Unlike the other products, Omnicell Analytics is not vendor agnostic. In addition to needing Omnicell ADMs, it varies from other solutions in that integration can only be done with Epic and Cerner. Omnicell Analytics monitors activity surrounding ADM activity only. Activity surrounding the CS Vault is not integrated into Omnicell Analytics. If the hospital system has multiple facilities and has their Omnicell ADMs set up as a single sign on, Omnicell Analytics can be used to see across the entire system which would be useful if the facility utilizes float staff. It utilizes a series of trend analysis and algorithms designed by a pharmacist that is based on peer to peer behavior. When asked what they see as the advantage to purchasing Omnicell Analytics monitoring software they stated, “We know our data best so we can provide the best experience around that feed and the data is real time.”

Throughout the course of gathering information on the various products, I have spoken to several Omnicell Analytics customers. I have not yet been provided customer contact information from Omnicell, so the conversations with past and current clients has been part of other encounters and therefore more of an informal setting where I did not ask the review questions. There is one theme that keeps coming up which I will share, and if I am given specific client contact info will add to the review at a later time. All seem to agree that Omnicell as a company no longer seems interested in investing in the product. Clients have provided suggestions for improvement multiple times with no response. A former Omnicell Analytics client knows of at least one incident of a fairly major diversion case at her facility which Omnicell Analytics completely missed. I did not get the impression from anyone that Omnicell Analytics has much of an advantage over Pandora Analytics. The vendor themselves stated some clients prefer the reports in Pandora and others Omnicell Analytics. Omnicell Analytics is an extra module, therefore an extra cost. I do not know if Pandora is an extra cost, but based on feedback received, I would review before investing in Omnicell Analytics for an additional cost if the goal is to improve upon Pandora.
